Project Description
The AFC Transformation Support Project, commissioned by FSD Kenya, aimed to support the Agricultural Finance Corporation (AFC) in its transition into a responsive, effective, and innovative Development Finance Institution (DFI). This strategic transformation support sought to enhance financial inclusion and improve access to finance in Kenya’s agricultural sector, particularly for smallholder farmers, women, youth, and other marginalized groups.
FSD Kenya engaged Centafrique Limited to lead the review and development of a sustainable wholesale financing model tailored for fintech and ag-tech enterprises. The ultimate goal was to test scalable financing solutions that leverage technology to expand access to affordable credit in the agri-sector especially agro-SMEs, smallholder, women and youth. Centafrique’s role in the assignment involved a comprehensive approach, beginning with in-depth market feasibility and market research and engagement. This informed the co-design of a robust framework, pilot financing model alongside a detailed risk management framework. In addition, Centafrique team developed of a robust monitoring and evaluation (M&E) framework to assess pilot performance and support adaptive learning. Together, these deliverables formed a foundational roadmap for AFC’s innovation and scale-up efforts, contributing to a more inclusive and tech-driven agricultural financing ecosystem in Kenya.
