Project Description

Centafrique Consulting was commissioned by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to design inclusive and financially viable regenerative agriculture business models aimed at fostering climate-resilient and sustainable farming systems. The focus of the assignment was on enhancing economic feasibility for smallholder farmers within the Central Highlands Ecosystem Foodscape (CHEF) region in Kenya.

The assignment employed an in-depth desk research, field-based value chain assessments, and extensive stakeholder consultations. Key actors engaged include farmers, cooperatives, agribusinesses, aggregators, financial institutions, and policymakers. This collaborative process identified gaps in current agricultural systems and allowed co-creation of practical, scalable regenerative models. The study prioritized high-potential value chains based on farmer economics, production trends, and regional viability. For each value chain, Centafrique identifies existing gaps, assesses alternative business models, and recommended region-specific pilot regions and pilot value chains. A robust operational structure and detailed process flows were defined for each proposed model.

In addition, the team developed comprehensive partnership matrices to foster linkages between upstream and downstream actors, along with financial models to assess viability and sustainability. An implementation framework is also designed to support the pilot phase, offering a clear roadmap for roll-out and monitoring.

The assignment provides critical insights and tools to strengthen the enabling environment for regenerative agriculture in Kenya and informs strategic interventions for sustainable rural development.
